Girl Groups We Love: BLACKPINK

I have spent a lot of time talking about boy bands on this blog, but let’s take a moment to appreciate a girl group that is KILLING IT right now – BLACKPINK!!!!

BLACKPINK is South Korean girl group (yes, I am very into the K-POP right now), made up of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. Interestingly, their members came from four different countries and backgrounds to make up this amazing band: Jisoo, born and raised in South Korea; Jennie, originally from South Korea but raised in New Zealand; Rosé, also originally from South Korea but raised in Australia; and Lisa, born and raised in Thailand.

Of course they debuted 2016 with the album Square One, which featured the absolute BANGER of a song Boombayah (below). And in four short years, they have absolutely crushed it, putting out hit after hit; Ddu-Du Ddu-Du (currently the most viewed music video of a Korean artist), Kill This Love and How You Like That. And most recently they have collaborated with Lady Gaga on Sour Candy and Selena Gomez on the super SUPER catchy Ice Cream.

But while BLACKPINK is the highest-charting female Korean act on the Billboard Hot 100, and were the first Korean girl group to enter and top Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart, what is most amazing is how they have done it with so few songs. Instead of releasing full albums, they typically release single albums that feature 3-4 songs each. So before releasing The Album in October, they basically had 12 songs – and all of them HUGE hits!

And BLACKPINK’s star is still rising! In 2019 they were the first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella and most recently, they were named the biggest music act in the world for the month of October 2020 according to Bloomberg’s Pop Star Power Ranking, a first for a Korean act. And if you haven’t watched BLACKPINK’s documentary on Netflix yet, I HIGHLY recommend it!

I LOVE to see a girl group absolutely dominating and breaking records, so let’s keep supporting BLACKPINK!

YOU GO GIRLS!
