DISNEY: Villains have the BEST songs

I know I’m a bit late to the game on Encanto, but believe me, I have bought into the hype! I have watched Disney’s latest animated musical many, many, many times and LOVE both the story and music. And with this latest musical, I have been listening to a lot of Disney playlists and rewatching many of the other musical classics, and thought it might be a good time for a countdown! And why not start with the villains because – lets face it – they have the BEST songs!

We don’t talk about Bruno – Encanto

So obviously I was inspired to do this post on this song alone. And – spoiler alert – Bruno isn’t actually a villain or any kind of bad guy, but at the beginning of the story he is positioned as very questionable! And since no one wants to mention his, I get a lot of Harry Potter/Voldemort vibes, so before you meet Bruno as a character, your just really not sure about this guy. But this track is THE CATCHIEST and once its in your head, it’s never getting out!

Mother knows best – Tangled

This is another seriously catchy song (in a movie filled with catchy songs) from Disney’s 2010 Tangled. The song is sung by Mother Gothel (the amazing Donna Murphy) and is how she convinces Rapunzel that the world is dangerous and she should never go outside – “ruffian, thugs, poison ivy, quicksand, cannibals and snakes – the plague!”. Well – she’s not wrong about the plague – touché, Mother Gothel, touché…

Love is and open door – Frozen

This may not be your typical villian song. You don’t actually realize it is a villian song until WAY later in Frozen, but (SPOILER) Hans is a bad guy! So this catchy duet with princess Anna is his way of worming himself into the kingdom! And once you know that he’s not a good guy, you can rewatch the scene and see all the ways that Hans is not in sync with Anna and just putting on a show during this song to get her KINGDOM! Do you see the signs when you watch it again? Or is it just me?

Gaston – Beauty and the Beast

Gaston is just a BAD guy – arrogant and chauvinistic and must have Belle at any cost! BUT his song is one of THE BEST! Started off by Le Fou to cheer up Gaston, the song focuses on all the crazy ways people think Gaston is the best – like how he’s covered in hair (ok – a lot of people wax so they aren’t hairy though) or how he bites in wrestling matches (classy). I love the original version and the remake, but here’s the remake for a little extra Le Fou humour.

Poor unfortunate souls – The Little Mermaid

And now my ALL TIME FAVORITE, poor unfortunate souls sand by the incomparable Pat Carrol as Ursula. This is a true typical villian song where, Ursula convinces Ariel to give up her voice and turn into a human to try and get her man. There are so many things that Ursula says that just leave you thinking “WHAT – don’t do it Ariel!”, but that’s what makes her the best villian! So convincing! AND the character of Ursula is based off of the drag queen Divine – and we all know how much I love drag queens!!

What is your favorite Disney villian song??
