Boy band bias appreciation – the BAD BOY

AND WHO DOESN’T LOVE A BAD BOY!?!?

Great boy bands ALWAYS have a variety of members. The more diverse the members, the more wide-ranging the fan base. So generally boy bands have members to fit various roles – the heartthrob, the shy one, the funny one, the responsible one. AND my favorite – the BAD BOY.

The bad boy is always my favorite member – probably because of the sullen, sassy, rebellious attitudes, all the tattoos and piercings, and the occasional fight or fire in a hotel to keep thing exciting! Of course, all of these bad boys actually have the biggest hearts and are secretly the sweetest – which makes us love them even more!

So lets take a look at my Top 5 FAVORITE Boy Band Bad Boys:

5. Abz Love – 5IVE

5ive had three members that could have probably filled the bad boy role, but I always thought Abz did bad boy the best. Maybe it was his style of rap, his ruthlessly hilarious honesty, or his general swag, but he definitely came off as a trouble-maker. We all know Abz had some troubles after the band broke up – drugs, money etc. – but I know we were all glad to see this bad boy settle down on a farm with chickens and horses and get comfortable with the country life!

4. AJ McLean – Backstreet Boys

Branded as “the bad boy” in the early days of Backstreet, AJ McLean’s bad boy borders on eccentric. He began collecting tattoos and piercings in the early days of the band, painted his nails a million different shades and usually wore over the top outfits and chains. Compared to the other members, his look was definitely considered different and had a bad boy vibe. AJ also has a sassy style of honesty, regularly letting his style of “real-talk” shine in interviews and concerts – giving him a reputation for telling the truth! AJ is very open about his struggles with addiction and highs and lows in life – which is very refreshing in an industry where image is everything.

3. Robbie Williams – Take That

Before he went on to achieve solo superstardom, Robbie Williams was the resident bad boy of Take That. And he provided the much needed edge to that band with the other four members coming off as pretty clean cut. He was notoriously unhappy and had conflict while in the band – especially when his ideas were often discarded and he was constantly relegated to second string vocals. Drinking and dabbling with drugs followed, along with increasingly belligerent and unreliable behaviour. In 1995 the rest of the band confronted him and Robbie quit. The story does have a happy ending, with Robbie going on to achieve success as a solo artist, getting clean and sober, and eventually reuniting with Take That 12 years later. But occasionally – especially in interviews – the “say first, think later” bad boy Robbie Williams still comes out!

2. Suga – BTS

Real name Min Yoongi, AKA Agust D, Suga is the resident bad boy in BTS. While he may not fulfill the traditional “bad boy” image of tattoos and breaking rules (because let’s face it, no one in BTS really breaks rules), Suga is defiant in his own way. He has a no nonsense approach to people, interviews and life, and just generally tells it like it is – which results in a super-sassy attitude that I love to see!! His solo projects under Agust D have a bit more edge, and Suga has always been very open about his struggles with anxiety and depression – something discouraged for Korean celebrities – which in my eyes makes him a rebel with a very worthy cause.

What You Never Knew About (Just Engaged!) Donnie Wahlberg | Donnie wahlberg, Nkotb, Joey mcintyre

1. Donnie Wahlberg – NKOTB

Last but not least, one of the original bad boys of boy bands! As one of nine children, growing up in the gritty neighbourhood of Dorchester, right away Donnie brought a roughness to NKOTB. Even in the early years of the band, Donnie had the most tattoos and piercings and would often wear the edgiest clothes, branding him the resident bad boy early on. His bad boy image intensified as he got sassier in interviews, got into fights, and in the ultimate bad boy move, set fire to a hotel in Louisville Kentucky after a rowdy party with fans. Donnie was charged with arson, but charges were later dismissed when he agreed to appear in public-service videos on fire safety. While Donnie still has an edge, he is now more known for his charitable work, being a good Samaritan and giving back.

Now that I’ve shared my favorites, who is your all time favorite boy band BAD BOY??

  1. In the beginning AJ was the bad boy of Backstreet. I think it was more of a front for the insecurity he felt. He definitely still the bositerious stage presence he just more settled and at peace. And eith his tattoos and love of nail polish he is what I call a pop punk. Hands down the most unique in boy band history if not overall
