Shout-out to Canadian boy bands!

For those of you who don’t know, I hail from the Great White North – the land of serious hockey playing, Celine Dion, Drake, Justin Bieber and where our Prime Minister is sometimes referred to as “the other JT”. My particular area of the country is often covered by snow for 8 months of the year, so it is no surprise that I have developed a lot of indoor interests – like boy band blogging!

But as I have been going through the Boy Band Bias series and the Boy Band Throwdown, I realize we are definitely missing some Canadian-content! Where are all the Canadian boy bands? I mean, I remember some (may have even gone to a few local concerts back in the day), but they don’t get talked about often in the grand scheme of boy bands. So, this post is dedicated to my Canadian boy bands and boy band fans!!

The Moffats

The Moffats are one of the few Canadian boy bands in recent memory, and are made up of brothers – the Canadian version of the Jonas brothers . Made up of Scott, Clint, Bob and Dave Moffat, the band started in the country genre in 1996 and quickly realized pop music was better! They put out two true boy band albums before breaking up in 2001. They briefly reunited in 2012, but sadly I don’t think there was very much buzz about the band after their initial rush onto the scene in the late 90s, early 00s. I remember the song Miss You Like Crazy, but during this time period it was difficult to get me to listen to much other than Five and BSB!

This is another band made up of brothers – twins Ryan and Dan – combined with one more member, Ohad (which technically according to my own rules, is borderline whether they are a boy band at all with only three members). The band formed in 1999 and had some hits – at least here in Canada – with Get Down and Ball and Chain. They even toured with Destiny’s Child! The most memorable thing about this band was their crazy spiked hair – just VERY heavy on the mousse! The band broke up on 2004, but Ryan and Dan went on to form RyanDan, and put out albums later as a duo.

By far the best Canadian boyband in my books, with the most hits and longest staying power was soulDecision (I also may be biased since I met them one time when I was in university!!). Active from 1993 – 2005, the band hit their peak in 2000 with their single Faded and the follow up single in 2001, Ooh It’s Kinda Crazy. The band was made up of three members, Trevor, David and Ken (again with the three members thing) and made only two studio albums. Their first studio album No One Does It Better sold over one million copies worldwide and in 2018, Billboard named the video for Ooh It’s Kinda Crazy as one of the top ten “Greatest Boy Band Videos of the TRL Era”, right along with other GIANT boy bands Backstreet Boy, NSYNC, and 98 Degrees. So, that’s saying something about the success of this band!
